Hi! My name is Leigha, and I’m a studio art major at EKU and a senior with a concentration in painting. Outside of school, I enjoy weightlifting, being outdoors, and endlessly trying to improve my Spotify playlists. I also enjoy thrifting and fashion; without self-control, I would buy every vintage leather jacket I come across!

With my graduation in December, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to finally study abroad. I came into college knowing I wanted to study abroad in the UK, and this trip is bringing those dreams to life. London has always been a bucket list destination for me, and I’m so excited to finally experience all the art, architecture, and culture the city has to offer. I am also extremely excited about visiting Scotland, especially for the castles and the landscape. Additionally, I’m hoping this trip will help make me more comfortable with international travel, as there are so many places in the world I want to go. I have never been abroad before, so this trip poses lots of excitement and learning opportunities!

This summer, London has many different special art exhibitions on display. Some I would be interested in are as follows: Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300-1350 in the National Gallery. The show focuses on early Italian Renaissance master painters from Sienna specifically, costs about twenty pounds for entry, and will be up until June 22nd. In the National Portrait Gallery, a collection of portraits by Edvard Munch will be on display until June 15th. Twenty-one pounds to attend, the 40+ works displayed promise an exciting look into Munch’s commissioned and personal works in portraiture. On a slightly more contemporary note, Claudio Parmiggianni will make his institutional debut in London at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art. Parmiggiani’s work sits somewhere between image and sculpture, with his Delocazioni impressions made with smoke and soot at the core of the exhibition.

Contemporary Artist- Linder Sterling

Linder Sterling (known as Linder) is a British artist, born in Liverpool in 1954. She is best known for her photo collages that deal with radical feminist ideas and her bold performance art. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in various galleries and museums, including Nottingham Contemporary, Kestnergesellschaft, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, and Museum of Modern Art PS1. Her group exhibitions include exhibitions at Tate Modern, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Tate Britain, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Linder was also part of a punk rock band, Ludus, in Manchester in the 1970s and 1980s, which greatly affected her and informed her work. She aims to share her lived experience as a woman in a patriarchal society to highlight the effects of these experiences on women’s lives. Sources for her collages include what she considers women’s magazines, such as fashion or romance magazines, and men’s magazines, such as car magazines or pornographic material. She uses both sources to show her experiences with gender norms and expected gender roles, as well as the commodification of sexual experiences through the juxtaposition of nudity and products from advertisements in magazines.
